SIKESTON, Mo. -- Republican Ralph E. Boyer is selected by the Scott County Republican Committee for submission to Gov. John Ashcroft for appointment to the Scott County Commission; Ashcroft will pick a new commissioner to fill the term of Eldon Ziegenhorn, who recently resigned.

H.J. Runyon, 52, of Center, Mo., cruises through Cape Girardeau in his homemade stage coach; Runyon is touring the state and estimates he will have traveled some 1,400 miles before he arrives back in Hannibal, Mo., where his excursion began.

1964

Cape Girardeau voters yesterday reversed themselves, enacting by a substantial margin a teachers' tax levy of $1.85 per $100 valuation; the same issue had been defeated April 7; passage of the levee will enable school officials to proceed with plans to hire new teachers, to give pay increases to those new in the system and to begin to put into effect an expanded vocational education program.

Not only will the new Conservation Commission building in Arena Park be moved from its controversial location to a spot farther east, it will also be constructed of stone or brick, instead of the concrete block that had been planned.

Bicycling is again growing in popularity in Cape Girardeau; from a scattering few women and men attempting to slim the waistline to the vigorous youth who wants to go places, the fad is spreading; with a new bike to be had from around $22 or upward, many Girardeans are figuring out ways to become owners of a wheel.

Roy Cato, manager of the Broadway Theater, says his show house has seen a 15 percent increase since the theater was renovated; in addition, the Broadway is showing first-order movies, such as "Jesse James," which drew an attendance of 9,000 in four days.

1914

The Meyer-Albert Co. is moving to its new building and will have everything out of the old location by tomorrow night.

The management of the Orpheum Theater has been advised that the moving picture artists, who were delayed by weather, will be here Friday and Saturday to film some good views of Cape Girardeau; among other scenes, they will film a big parade of school children Saturday afternoon.
