Responding to remarks of a coach, a parent's complaints and concerns expressed by a board member, the Cape Girardeau Board of Education yesterday authorized a task force to study the district's athletic programs; the task force will evaluate the district's sports programs and make recommendations for improvements on the high school and junior high level.

George Staples Jr., of Charleston, Mo., has filed an appeal on a judge's recent decision in the lengthy Westborough Mall case, which has been in the courts for the past decade; a federal judge ruled recently that the city of Cape Girardeau wasn't liable for an erroneous decision made by its then-city manager regarding the reversion of zoning for a mall development.

Three Cape Girardeans have been selected to take part in the circuit convention of Jehovah's Witnesses to be held in Paragould, Ark., May 22-24; they are Paul Thiessen, Noah Niswonger and D. Harold Althen Jr.

At Central High School 179 seniors, the largest group in the history of the school, are eligible to graduate at the annual commencement exercises at Teachers College next Wednesday; of this number 53 are from the class which finished in January, the remaining 126 to complete studies after final exams Monday and Tuesday.

Mrs. Ralph Eaton, who with Mr. Eaton has been in charge of the buildings and grounds at the Country Club for the past two years, is selected by the Teachers College Board of Regents as the matron of Cheney Hall, the new men's dormitory, which is nearing completion.

D.B. Smith, superintendent of the shoe factory, has signed a contract with the Morrison Ice & Fuel Co. to furnish the factory with pure artesian well water; this water will be pumped to a sanitary steel tank on the top floor of the factory, and will then pass through ice-chilled pipe coils to modern drinking faucets on each floor of the big plant.

The Cape Girardeau Capahas take the first contest of the league season, defeating the visiting Chaffee, Mo., team, 12-9.
