A planned move of Southeast Missouri State University's athletic teams to NCAA Division I will be delayed one year as part of a $800,000 budget cutting plan announced by the university; in addition, the inauguration of a fully operational National Public Radio station will be postponed a year.

Judy A. Moss, 44, of Bowling Green, Missouri, has joined the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce staff as director of economic development; she will assume her post June 5.

1964

Retail sales volume in Cape Girardeau County did the usual -- it climbed -- during a quarter in which sales tax rose from 2 to 3 percent; sales tax collections reported by county businesses during the first three months of 1964 point to $12,176,768 in retail commerce for the quarter before.

The Farmers and Merchants Bank bowling team won the Industrial League championship this year; team members are Virgil Cotner, Ray DeMoro, Clarence Greaser Jr., Jim Welter and Jim Reinagel.

1939

Pupils from the grade school at Fornfelt, up to and including the seventh grade, hold a picnic at Fairground Park, while the Fornfelt eighth grade holds an outing at Ellis Park.

The city will construct, with the aid of WPA labor, curbs, gutters and sidewalks along the 900-foot western frontage of Fairground Park at the side of Perry Avenue; property owners, who previously built walks along the west side of Perry, filed a petition for the curbing and gutters.

The Rev. James A. Murtaugh received a great surprise through the mail yesterday, when a letter was handed him from the officers of the Southeast Missouri Drummers' Association; it was an invitation to the well-known priest to become chaplain of the organization.

Fifty sales managers and bankers of St. Louis, making a trip around the adjacent territory of St. Louis' commercial influence, arrived in Cape Girardeau yesterday and spent the night here; they were welcomed by 100 business and professional men at the train depot and escorted to the Elks Club for speeches and entertainment.
