1964

Street repair work on a stretch of Independence Street from Benton Street east to Pacific Street continues in the rain by a seven-man track gang of the Missouri Pacific railroad; the crew is resurfacing the street between the railroad tracks with asphalt to correct a washboard effect that had developed since the street at that location was last worked on in 1961.

Doug Halcomb batted a blistering .412 to pace Central High School's baseball attack in the season just completed; the Tigers had another highly successful season, running up a 15-3 record and taking the Southeast Missouri Baseball Conference Championship a sixth consecutive time.

1939

A public Memorial Day service is conducted in the afternoon at Old Lorimier Cemetery; plans made by the members of the Sons of Union Veterans, the Auxiliary and other organizations, however, had to be abandoned; keynote speaker at the cemetery service is Judge Oscar A. Knehans; graves of war veterans were decorated earlier in the day with flowers and American flags.

A special Memorial Day service is held in the evening at Grace Methodist Church; Sons of Civil War Veterans and Spanish-American War Veterans, as well as the auxiliaries for both groups, are in attendance.

1914

The three front rows of seats at the Normal auditorium will be reserved for children when Handel's "Messiah" is presented here Monday evening; only half price, or 25 cents, will be charged for their admission, in order to encourage parents to send the youngsters; one of the soloists for the concert will be a Cape Girardeau singer, W.G. Lewis, tenor.

Several men are at work repairing the wood blocks between the streetcar tracks on Broadway, where the blocks have "bulged out."
