Nature Center hosts Second Sunday Art

The Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center will host Second Saturday Art, a celebration of artists who use the natural world for inspiration, from 9 a.m. to noon June 14 at the center. The free program is open to all ages with no registration required. Participants are asked to bring their own supplies, such as pencils, paints, fibers, textiles, clay, wood, paper or camera, as well as a lawn chair to set up on the grounds.

Learn to carve a hummingbird

Nature lovers can learn how to carve a hummingbird from wood during a free workshop at the Cape Girardeau ConservationNature Center from 6 to 8 p.m. June 19. Reservations will open Thursday; call 290-5218. Participants must be 16 and older. Supplies will be provided.

Cateye Studio offers classes

Cateye Glasses ART Studio will conduct a workshop on recycling or repurposing objects into art -- Art Goes GREEN -- Tuesday through Thursday. A second workshop -- Strings and Things -- Fiber Art Techniques -- will be presented by the studio June 10 to 12. During both workshops, ages 5 to 8 will meet from 10 a.m. to noon, and ages 9 and older from 3 to 5 p.m. The cost of the workshops is $65. Most supplies will be provided. Collaborative projects created by the participants will be donated to the community for display. The studio also offers art classes each Monday. Ages 5 to 8 meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and ages 9 and older meet from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Classes cost $50 a month.

River Campus to hold summer camps

A percussion and steel drum camp for grades seven to 12 will be June 11 through 14 at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. The camp will include private lessons, master classes and clinics, focusing on snare drum, mallet percussion, steel pan, timpani, drum set, accessory percussion (cymbals, tambourine, triangle, etc.), percussion ensemble and steel drum band. The commuter fee is $275 and includes meals and activities. The resident fee of $350 includes lodging, meals and activities. The River Campus will also host a Chamber Music Institute July 14 to 19 for ages 12 and older. The camp will include private lessons, master classes, intensive coaching and recitals. Instruments featured will be violin, viola, cello, string bass, guitar, piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone and bassoon. The commuter fee of $325 includes meals and activities. Jackson muny band announces schedule

The Jackson Municipal Band, an institution at the Cape Girardeau County seat since 1920, has announced its summer concert schedule. Unless otherwise noted, all concerts begin at 7 p.m. at the Jackson City Park band shell, with special guests performing before the band. Guests are Barefoot on Sunday and Thursday; Doug E. Rees on June 12; "Dueling Pianos" with Pete Parysek and Joseph Greer on June 19; Whitewater Bluegrass Band on June 26; The Southern Brothers on July 3; Pat Schwent and Saxy Jazz on July 4; Steve Schaffner on July 10; Jordan and Kasey Cox on July 17; Jackson Homecomers Concert in uptown Jackson at 6:30 p.m. July 22; Sylvia Kern on July 31 and Mark Rees on Aug. 7.
