Lou Nathaniel Hannaford

Lou Nathaniel Hannaford, 90, of Cape Girardeau, died Thursday, June 5, 2014, in Cape Girardeau.

He was born April 4, 1924, in Roodhouse, Illinois, to Oscar Minor and Blanche Mae Rudd Hannaford.

He and Kathryn Ann Fisher were married on May 30, 1957, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Slater, Missouri.

Lou was a World War II veteran in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1948, serving as a radio operator.

He was an original crew member aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea CVB43 when the carrier was commissioned.

Lou was an engraver for both Hallmark and American Greetings cards. He also did some steel engraving and worked for Saint Francis Medical Center in the print shop.

He was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, VFW Post 3838, the American Legion in Slater, and later in Cape Girardeau.

He worked with the local Boy Scouts, had been a brother in monasteries in Illinois and Kansas, and had many hobbies. He enjoyed cartooning, crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He was a ham radio operator and an avid reader.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; son Mike Hannaford of Jefferson City, Missouri; four daughters, Patti (Doug) Corbin of St. Louis, Dr. Karen (Dr. Mark) Eshraghi of Osage Beach, Missouri, Bernadette Hannaford of Cape Girardeau, and Angie (James) Cowell of Crestwood, Kentucky, and twin sister Natalie Owen of Slater; two sisters-in-law, Helen Hannaford of Slater and Dot Hannaford of Sarasota, Florida; five grandchildren, Adam (Emily) Hannaford of St. Charles, Missouri, Addie Hannaford of Holts Summit, Missouri, Audrey Corbin of St. Louis, Connor and Katie Cowell of Crestwood, Kentucky; two nephews, Buddy Hannaford of Trenton, Missouri and Jack Myer of Rocheport, Missouri; two nieces, Susie Hannaford of Fishers, Indiana and Natalie Carter of Independence, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau with parish prayers at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church with Father Bobby Manso and Deacon Robert Huff officiating.

Burial will be at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum with full military honors by the Missouri Honors Team.

Memorial contributions may be given to St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church or Southeast Hospice.
