CAIRO, Ill. -- Barbara J. Hoppe, 81, of Cairo passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, surrounded by her loving children. She was born Jan. 30, 1933, in Alexander County, Illinois, daughter of Lola Singleton Nardi. She was one of 16 children. She was raised in Cairo by her grandparents, Ralph and Marie Hawkins. She married Herschel G. Hoppe on Sept. 3, 1946. He preceded her in death Feb. 1, 1993...

CAIRO, Ill. -- Barbara J. Hoppe, 81, of Cairo passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2014, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau, surrounded by her loving children.

She was born Jan. 30, 1933, in Alexander County, Illinois, daughter of Lola Singleton Nardi. She was one of 16 children. She was raised in Cairo by her grandparents, Ralph and Marie Hawkins. She married Herschel G. Hoppe on Sept. 3, 1946. He preceded her in death Feb. 1, 1993.

Most of Barbara's life was spent in Cairo. She was a wonderful mother, a kind and generous person that was always willing to help whenever and wherever it was needed. Those who knew Barbara will remember that she always had a smile on her face. She was of the Baptist belief.

Barbara worked 28 years at Snower's Manufacturing Co., and for many years at the Elks Lodge, both in Cairo.

Survivors include three daughters, Loretta Hilt of Cairo, Mary Fiessinger (Steve) of Barlow, Kentucky, and Donna Farris (Paul) of Cape Girardeau; a son, Darrell Hoppe (Pam) of Cairo; 10 grandchildren, Michelle Bourland, Lisa Garrett, Chad Burns, Stephanie Cooper, Annalisa Lee, Amy Simpson, George B. Thompson IV, John Paul Farris, David Hoppe and Derek Hoppe; 13 great-grandchildren, Erik Frayser, Kelsey Bodhe, Emily Corry, Tacey and Alissa Burns, Peyton, Taylor and Madison Cooper, Reed and Bailey Lee, Sydney Simpson, Tyler Thompson and Alissa Farris; three great-great-grandchildren, Madyson Bodhe, Miley Pitcher and Bryson Frayser; several brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; mother; grandparents; a son, Glen Hoppe; and a son-in-law, Tom Hilt.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Green Lawn Memorial Gardens in Villa Ridge, Illinois, with Kim Nelson officiating.

Crain Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Home and will be accepted at the funeral home or cemetery.
