It was definitely "dark side" day at Cape Girardeau Public Library on Saturday. Dressed as various "Star Wars" characters, library staff members entertained and terrified children in the lobby of the library, while in the side conference room Tim Morgan gave a lecture on decoding the handwriting of a psychopath.

The conference room in the library was nearly full, as about 50 people filled the seats, waiting for what Morgan could tell them about the handwriting of psychopaths and serial killers.

Morgan is a graduate of the New Jersey State Troopers Police Academy. He earned his master's of science in criminal justice administration at Almeda University and his Expert Handwriting Certification from Handwriting University International. He is an expert court document examiner from the International School of Forensic Documentation.

For 57 years, Morgan has analyzed people based on their handwriting. He explained that by looking at a person's handwriting he can determine how stubborn a person is, his personality, if he is distressed or angry, whether a person is honest, and even whether a woman is pregnant, Morgan claims he can determine the sex of the baby just by looking at the woman write a few key words.

According to Morgan, his study of analyzing handwriting is based on empirical evidence.

"It's actually living people doing these things, that sign off a certain way. ... It's their psychology that makes them write this way; they all didn't learn it at the same place," Morgan joked about a serial killers' penmanship.

In GraphoTherapy, the practice of using handwriting as a developmental tool to change a person's personality, Morgan says this can be done as well, with only minor changes to a person's lifestyle.

"Many times, and you can look this up, if you change one itty-bitty thing about your handwriting, your personality will change as well," he said.

The first example Morgan gave was of a serial killer from Arizona. He described the "pasty, thick, ink-bleeding" strokes these killers use when writing. This is done by pushing the pen hard into the paper, allowing the ink to bleed, and by retracing letters.

There also are different ways to pair the handwriting styles to see whether a person is dangerous, Morgan said.

"Distance between words is a sign of honesty, but when paired with pasty blood writing they say: 'I'm waiting for my opportunity,'" Morgan said.

He also explained what different slants of letters mean, how a person loops their letters, and what it means when letters don't connect correctly.

This was the first time Karen Shamblin has attended one of Morgan's lectures. She thought it was interesting and was excited to learn more about her daughter's handwriting, which she said changed when she began school.

"I thought it was good, it was interesting that by studying you can learn what your own handwriting means, and I enjoyed it very much," she said.

Morgan said people are always amazed by his analyses. He said his prediction is right 85 to 90 percent of the time, and sometimes, they are "absolutely on."

Morgan owns the Hypnotherapy Center in Kelso, Missouri, where he has worked for the last 22 years.

"I am a professional hypnotist," Morgan said. "I do witnesses and victims of crimes. I also do stage hypnosis and I train hypnotists. Since 1997, I have trained 54 national guild hypnotists from the National Guild of Hypnotists out of Merrimack, New Hampshire."

Hypnotherapy is a do-no-harm conservative therapy that trains people out of their disorders by looking at handwriting, Morgan said.

Morgan is writing his second book. His first, "The Enneagram of Miracles," was published in 2012. For more information on Morgan, his novel or his services, visit handwritingexpertofmissouri.com.
