1964

Plans are to exercise options late this week by a community organization to purchase a 64-acre tract in Illmo upon which a convalescent home is to be built and industrial ground would be made available; some home lots are also to be sold; the tract is south of the Cotton Belt Railroad lines.

The state of Illinois says it is suspending work on Interstate 57 in Southern Illinois pending a decision on its junction with Interstate 24.

1939

Roy Morgan of Cape Girardeau last month had the misfortune of losing his 1935 Plymouth in the muddy waters of the Mississippi when it slipped from its parking spot and dashed into the river; efforts to rescue the car failed, and Morgan made a claim with his insurance company for compensation; unfortunately, he was advised that damage or loss of the car as a result of a bath in the river wasn't covered; Morgan has since bought a new automobile.

City commissioner Phillip H. Steck warns that water from a spring on Merriwether Street between Hanover Street and Henderson Avenue shouldn't be used; tests made of the water at the Teachers College show the spring is contaminated.

1914

Because of the large crowd attending last night's city council meeting to hear consideration of the appeal of picture-show men for the privilege of opening their places on Sunday nights, the council holds its session in the Common Pleas courtroom; no action was taken on the matter; the council listened attentively for more than an hour to the reading of names on the petition and then ordered the completion of the reading postponed until the next meeting, the first Monday in August.

T.J. Shorb has been given the contract to pave North Fountain Street, between Broadway and North Street.
