Severe weather caused power outages and downed trees in Cape Girardeau and surrounding areas Wednesday morning.

A tree fell during the storm, blocking Interstate 55 around mile marker 89 south of Scott City, according to the Scott County Sheriff's Department. It since has been cleared, and the only other reports in the area have been of minor debris.

In Cape Girardeau, damaged trees downed power lines on North Pacific Street, Keller Avenue and Luce Street, and in the 1700 block of Independence Street, according to the Cape Girardeau Fire Department.

An Ameren Missouri spokesman said 3,000 customers were affected by a power outage near Southeast Hospital that occurred at 12:16 p.m. The problem was fixed by 1:30 p.m.

The local area received 1.09 inches of rainfall before clearing up before noon, but the winds associated with the storm were responsible for most of the trouble, according to the National Weather Service
