Opal C. "Dee" Messmer, 85, of Scott City died Friday, July 25, 2014, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

She was born Aug. 21, 1928, in Scott City, the daughter of Louis Charles and Mary Ada Brown Kalkbrinner. She married Cletus F. Messmer on June 20, 1953.

Dee was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Scott City. She was also a member of VFW Post 6407 Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Dee (Conley) Laster and Kay (David) Gilpin, both of Commerce, Missouri; a sister, Marje (Dale) Vinyard of Owensville, Missouri; four grandchildren, Melinda (Scott) Engelen, Beth (Branden) McCullough, Brian (Krissy) Gilpin and Amber (Robert) Gill; and five great-grandchildren, Addison, Drew, Colin, Eli and Owen.

She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City. Funeral mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Oliver Clavin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel is in Charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
