The U.S. Senate yesterday approved $500,000 for the Cape Girardeau-Jackson flood-control project; the measure now goes to a House-Senate conference committee, where a final version will be worked out; the project will work to stem flash flooding along Cape LaCroix and Walker creeks.

Donald L. Harrison, 64, of Cape Girardeau, chief executive officer and owner of a number of construction-related companies, has been appointed to the Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents by Gov. John Ashcroft; he replaces Kay Schilly.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Representatives of the Frisco Railroad told the Chaffee City Council last night the railroad strongly opposes a proposed ordinance requiring full train crews in Chaffee; the company promises to fight such an ordinance all the way to the Supreme Court.

Work on the new post office building in Cape Girardeau comes to a standstill in the morning as the result of a walkout by four laborers Monday; the walkout is the result of the firing of a worker by the construction supervisor for Means Brothers Inc.

Founded as a summer camp for the Negro Boy Scout Troop of Cape Girardeau, but destined in the future to be a camp for all boys of that race in the district, a site on Whitewater River has been secured by Judge I.R. Kelso under direction of the boys' committee of the Rotary Club; the first camp, for members of Troop 101, of the Cobb School, will open around Aug. 10; the camp site is on the J.A. Cobble property, 5 miles northwest of Millersville.

The melon harvest in Southeast Missouri is again on the move as cantaloupes are pouring forth from hundreds of fields and watermelons are just beginning to be shipped out; the largest supply of cantaloupes is coming from Scott County, while watermelons are coming from Mississippi and Dunklin counties.

In making his first official report to the board of supervisors of the Little River Drainage District this week, chief engineer William O'Brien estimated the total number of miles of ditches so far dug at 47.5.
