More than 500 "Star Trek" fans from around the country are attending CONtinuum, a three-day "Star Trek" convention at the Holiday Inn; part of the convention's program includes appearances by Harve Bennett, producer of four "Star Trek" movies, and Jean Lorrah, a "Star Trek" novelist.

Dr. Robert M. Gifford, professor of music at Southeast Missouri State University and recipient of the 1988 Faculty Merit Award, was guest speaker last night at the summer commencement exercises at the Show Me Center.

Cape Girardeau County voters yesterday gave party nominations for county judge to Arnold Roth, Herbert Brune and Leonard Dalton, each in a tight race, and supported by substantial majorities the Democratic nominations of Sen. Albert Spradling Jr. and Rep. Paul C. Jones of Kennett, Missouri; voter turnout was probably curtailed by the heat, which reached 103 degrees in the afternoon, and by a thunderstorm that swept Cape Girardeau about an hour before the polls closed.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The largest Court of Honor in the history of Boy Scouting here was climaxed last night by the awarding of the first Eagle rank in Troop 52 to Jim Stubbs Jr.

Sent home from the Ban Johnson Baseball League team at Beloit, Kansas, because he had been exposed to the mumps, J.T. Cotner, young pitcher and son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Cotner of Cape Girardeau, finds those in the know had the right dope, for he has the mumps; he will have to stay in bed a few days.

TRENTON, Mo. -- The Cape Girardeau team advances in the State American Legion junior baseball championship by downing Chillicothe, Missouri, 5-0; tomorrow they'll play St. Louis.

An unusually small vote was polled in the primary election yesterday in Cape Girardeau County, less interest being manifested by the Democrats than by the Republicans; as usual, it has been hard to get the returns from some of the outlying precincts, so the final results aren't known.

The H.A. Johnson Paint and Wall Paper Co. has opened an exclusive wall paper, paint, varnish and picture-framing store on Main Street in the building formerly occupied by the Commercial Bar.
