Two serious accidents occurred in Southeast Missouri over the weekend. The first was Saturday at 9:47 p.m. along Highway 25 in Clarkton, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Two serious accidents occurred in Southeast Missouri over the weekend.

The first was Saturday at 9:47 p.m. along Highway 25 in Clarkton, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

A southbound vehicle driven by Cheil W. Cardenas, 44, of Piggott, Arkansas, ran off the road and overturned. Cardenas was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene at 10:10 p.m. by Dunklin County Coroner James Powell.

The next day, five people were injured in Jackson in a head-on collision on U.S. 61.

The crash happened about 3:15 p.m. Sunday, when a vehicle driven by Regina A. Mize, 39, of Jackson ran off the road, overcorrected and then came back onto the road, running head-on into the car of Bertha M. Foster, 70, of Jackson.

Mize had three minors in the vehicle with her, 17-year-old Victoria R. Kelley, 8-year-old Justin T. Murphy and Nathan C. Kelley, 15, all of Jackson.

Mize, Victoria Kelley and Murphy were all seriously injured and taken to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Murphy was airlifted to St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Foster was taken to Southeast Hospital and Nathan Kelley was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center, both with minor injuries.

Online records show only Nathan Kelley and Foster were wearing seat belts.

Mize was charged with three felony counts of second-degree assault, possession of a controlled substance and not wearing a seat belt, according to the highway patrol.
