Regina Mize and Justin Murphy have died as a result of a car accident Sunday afternoon.

Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton said Mize, 39, of Jackson died in the hospital Wednesday shortly after the death of Justin Murphy, 8, at St. Louis Children's hospital.

Neither was wearing seat belts during the accident.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the accident occurred when five people were injured in a head-on collision on U.S. 61.

The crash happened about 3:15 p.m., when Mize ran off the road, overcorrected and came back onto the road, where her vehicle collided with one driven by Bertha M. Foster, 70, of Jackson.

In the car with Mize were Victoria R. Kelley, 17, Nathan C. Kelley, 15, and Murphy, all of Jackson.

Mize, Victoria Kelley and Murphy were seriously injured and taken to Saint Francis Medical Center. Murphy soon after was airlifted to St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Foster was taken to Southeast Hospital, and Nathan Kelley was taken to Saint Francis Medical Center, both with minor injuries.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported only Nathan Kelley and Foster were wearing their seat belts.

Mize was charged with three felony counts of second-degree assault, possession of a controlled substance and not wearing a seat belt after the accident, Missouri State Highway Patrol records showed.
