A Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department deputy spots an escapee from a Farmington Correctional Center work detail, touching off a massive manhunt north of Jackson in which tracking dogs and a helicopter are used; the escapee had been picking up trash along Interstate 55 near Route K.

Attorney Albert M. Spradling Jr., representing the owners of 57 parcels of land along Cape LaCroix Creek, appears before the Cape Girardeau City Council to discuss straightening the creek as a means of flood prevention.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The proposed ordinance that would have required full crews on all trains crossing city streets and alleys here dies when the City Council takes no final action on the plan; Frisco Railroad officials strongly opposed the measure.

The probability of immediate war in Europe rests wholly with Poland, says Dr. William T. Doherty, head of the department of history at Teachers College; in the event of a general war in Europe, he believes the probability of the United States remaining out of the conflict depends upon its duration.

It appears the city of Cape Girardeau will have enough money to pay its bills, even through the lean months of September and October; should it run out of money, bills could be pushed back a short while until tax money starts coming in.

1914

The Boy Scout encampment at Burfordville kicks off; eight automobiles carrying 32 members of Troop 1, Scoutmaster Wilson Bain and Assistant Scoutmaster Walter Kuss leave Courthouse Park for Burfordville early in the afternoon; they will pitch their tents on the banks of Whitewater River.

E.H. Goodchild, the well-known farmer living on the upper Bend Road, came near losing one of his little twin boys yesterday; in some manner, the child fell into a cistern which contained a few inches of water; he was rescued by his 14-year-old brother, who was lowered into the cistern by a rope.
