Aloysius T. Schoen, 97, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, at Life Care Center of Cape Girardeau.

He was born, Dec. 9, 1916, in Cape Girardeau, to Charles and Mary Welker Schoen. He and Doretta Himmelsbach were married May 23, 1942, at Chaffee, Missouri. She preceded him in death in October 1978.

Aloysius was a longtime member of St. Mary's Cathedral. His family moved from Chaffee to New Hamburg, Missouri, when he was 6 years old. He started working at his father's grocery store when he was 12 years old.

He had worked at J.C. Penney, Associated Funds, the shoe factory in Chaffee and Essner's Hardware (now Whitakers). He also owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store in Cape Girardeau.

Aloysius volunteered at Saint Francis Medical Center as an auxiliary member over 30 years and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1111 in Cape Girardeau.

He was a past member of VIP board of directors DBA Heartland Industries, board of directors of Marian Charities, and chaired the Tootsie Roll Drive. He received many awards including a Community Service Award from J.C. Penney, the Vernice Baumstark Award from Saint Francis Auxiliary, the Marian Charities Volunteer of the Year, and Knights of Columbus Knight of the Year.

Survivors include a son, Thomas (Sandy) Schoen of Oak Ridge; a daughter, Karen Schoen of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Margaret Seiler of Sikeston, Missouri; two grandchildren, Erin (Cory) Easley of Cape Girardeau, Charles Schoen of Fredericktown, Missouri; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Oliver Easley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a brother, Anton Schoen; and a sister, Dorothy Jansen.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m., followed by KC rosary.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cathedral, with the Rev. Allan Saunders officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the charity of one's choice.
