A proposal by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railroad that the Cape Girardeau Convention and Tourism Bureau purchase blocks of train tickets over the next three years to assist the railroad financially receives mixed reactions at a meeting of the bureau's advisory board.

A recycling center is being proposed for a site which formerly housed a cellulose-insulation manufacturing operation that was the source of a paper dust emissions problem; Roger Friedrich wants to operate his new business at the former Polar Therm building just west of City Hall.

The church of the Foursquare Gospel has two new pastors, the Rev. and Mrs. Jerry Scarbrough; Mr. Scarbrough preached his first sermon here last Sunday; they will preach alternately on future Sundays.

Awards Day is observed at Red Star Baptist Church, with the Rev. Earl Tharp, pastor, presenting awards for perfect attendance at Sunday School; the Charles Crawford family sets an attendance record; four Crawfords receive recognition for perfect Sunday School attendance: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Crawford and Candace and Carla Crawford.

Work on clearing Houck Woods in the southern part of the city as a proposed playground for children of that district has slowed; the city has withdrawn its manpower from the project, saying it cannot help with the improvements because the property is privately owned.

The St. Mary's High School boys basketball team reported for practice this week under their new coach, Carl Meyer; among the players hoping for a spot on the team are lettermen Norman Wood, Robert Vandeven, John Horn, Melvin Sunderman, Victor Brant and George Yallaly.

1914

Garrett Glenn will move his tailoring shop from the Idan-ha Hotel building to the second floor of the H.-H. Building.

The local high school football team showed some pluck in its game Friday afternoon with the Anna, Illinois, team at the fairgrounds; to be clear, there was little football played, except that the visiting team made several successful passes for forward gains; Anna came out the winner, kicking a goal after its touchdown for a 7-6 win.
