Kelly cruises past Chaffee 48-18

Southeast Missourian ~ CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Kelly scored on its first three offensive possessions and its defense scored on Chaffee's first offensive possession as the Hawks posted a 48-18 road victory Friday night.

Kelly (4-5), which is a first-year varsity program, took the game's opening kickoff and drove 72 yards for a 7-0 lead. Senior Dalton Huffman pulled in an 8-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Kyle Fitzgerald to cap the drive.

The Hawks' defense quickly made it 14-0 when Chaffee quarterback Jordan Wilburn was hit while throwing in Kelly territory. His pass toward the right sideline went backward and was ruled a fumble, which was scooped up by Kelly's Bryan Rogers and returned 54 yards for a touchdown.

Ethan Faires added a 66-yard touchdown run with 41 seconds left in the first quarter for a 21-0 lead.

A 25-yard TD run by junior Maurice Davis midway through the second quarter gave the Hawks a 28-0 lead at halftime.

Chaffee (0-8) scored the first points of the second half, but the Red Devils, who scored a season-high 18 points, never cut the deficit to less than 22 points. Each team scored three touchdowns in the second half.

Faires led the Hawks with 211 yards rushing on 22 carries.
