Cape Girardeau councilmen David Limbaugh and Jim Rust both announce they will seek re-election.

CHESTER, Ill. -- Illinois Transportation secretary Greg Baise announces his state will provide an additional $175,000 to the previous commitment of $250,000, matching the action of the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission yesterday to complete the financing required for the bridge to receive a new paint job and minor deck repairs; in the future, maintenance of the bridge will be assumed by Illinois and Missouri, as the states take over ownership.

1964

An avalanche of Democratic votes from Cape Girardeau yesterday claimed Cape Girardeau County for that party's national and state ticket by substantial margins, but ballot splitting prevented a Democratic sweep on the county level; county voters followed the nation in supporting President Lyndon B. Johnson over Sen. Barry Goldwater, the first time since 1948 that Cape Girardau County went Democratic in a presidential race.

Sen. Stuart Symington, D-Missouri, topped the state Democratic ticket, winning a third term over Republican Jean Paul Bradshaw of Springfield by more than a two to one margin; also, Secretary of State Warren E. Hearnes of Charleston, Missouri, trumped Republican Ethan Shepley in the race for governor.

1939

As hundreds of people line Broadway, Spanish and other nearby streets and vantage points, Bob and Bette, daring sky dancers, present their initial round of dances atop a high pole over the former Park Hotel building on Lower Broad; not only does the snappy weather furnish thrills to the crowd, but the doings of the daredevil couple furnish tingles besides.

The annual Missourian Art Show opens at the Gift Shop and The Missourian arcade; 22 pictures, the work of 10 local artists, make up the exhibit.

1914

Every Republican candidate on the county ticket was elected yesterday; there were some surprises; Tom Juden was expected to win over D.A. Nichols for Common Pleas clerk, but the latter prevailed.

The livery stable on Spanish Street at the foot of the courthouse hill catches fire late in the afternoon and quickly burns down; 15 horses are saved.
