A broken natural gas line near William Street and Henderson Avenue forces authorities to wake up nine families around 3 a.m. as a precautionary measure; Union Electric workers have gas restored by 5 a.m.

Real estate broker Gerald McElrath last night accused the Jackson Board of Aldermen of discriminating against him by refusing to reconsider rezoning his property at 810 U.S. 61 East; McElrath said his property should be rezoned from residential to commercial since property "on the side and front" of his already is commercially zoned.

1964

The south end of Arena Park, undeveloped and unused since it was acquired years ago, will be remade in a massive earth-moving operation Nov. 20 and 21; the fair board, and the city and county, in cooperation with the Cape Special Road District and numerous contractors and machinery equipment firms, will undertake the project; the 17-odd acres will be converted into usable park space.

State College's Flying Indians place third in the power-on precision landing and member Don Godwin of Cape Girardeau is the top individual pilot at the Mid-Winter National Intercollegiate Flying Association's Air Meet at the municipal airport.

1939

W.H. Stubbs, 1725 Broadway, appeared before the city council again Monday afternoon to ask that some project be worked out to relieve storm water conditions along Broadway, west from Perry Avenue.

With a capacity crowd in attendance, the $200,000 library building at the Teachers College, heralded as one of the finest in the country, is dedicated in the evening; Girardeans and many others from the area fill the spacious reading room, more than 500 persons being seated for the dedication; simultaneously, an open house is held at Cheney Hall, the new dormitory for men.

1914

Sam M. Carter, chairman of the finance committee of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club, has called a meeting of business men Friday evening to take action on the financial affairs of the club; through the failure of some members to pay their dues, the club has become financially embarrassed; it has dues of more than $1,000 outstanding and owes about $900.

Contractor John Rouse, who is doing the concrete work on Ellis Street for J.H. Keller, finishes the first block of the paving and starts on the second.
