Mount Auburn Christian Church has called Wesley Wright to join the staff as minister; he is a 1984 graduate of St. Louis Christian College and received a master's degree from Lincoln Christian Seminary in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1988.

About 35 United Parcel Service employees spend most of the day picking up parcels and merchandise that spilled yesterday when a Union Pacific train derailed south of Randles; the derailment occurred at 6:40 p.m. Saturday on a St. Louis-Southwestern (Cotton Belt) Railroad track south of the Cape Girardeau-Stoddard counties line.

1964

The autumn drought was definitely broken overnight by light rain; prior to this week, there had been 49 rainless days for Cape Girardeau and the area; the rain was measured at .88 of an inch.

A suggestion made weeks ago by Mayor W.E. Davis that the present post office building might be suitable as a new location for the Cape Girardeau Public Library has been received favorably by library officials; the post office-federal building will be partially abandoned in the coming months, when the postal facilities are moved; the other federal offices may also vacate, if the government decides to build a new federal building here.

1939

Operation of the mill of the Himmelberger-Harrison Lumber Co., at Morehouse, Missouri, will resume Monday, with the original force of 225 men returning to work; the plant has been closed 12 weeks by a strike, which followed the organization of a union among employees.

A new allotment of labor on the new city park project, which should assure completion of the park and community center, has been approved, and work under terms of the new order will begin tomorrow.

1914

Earl G. Gramling and E.G. Hancock return early in the morning from Caruthersville, Missouri, where they spent a few days shooting ducks; they bring back the limit of the birds.

The chrysanthemum and baby show at the Presbyterian Church in Jackson was a success; the large room was crowded to suffocation, and the ladies secured a handsome sum for the church; the prize winners in the baby show were Marie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Fox, and Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hopper.
