John A. Garms, 87, of Scott City died Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, at his home.

He was born June 8, 1927, at Oak Hill, Missouri, to John F. and Norah M. Kohrmann Garms. He was first married to Rosa May Guillory of Port Barre, Louisiana, on Dec. 1, 1950. He later married Helen M. Arnold on Oct. 15, 1977, at Illmo Baptist Church in Scott City. She preceded him in death Feb. 23, 2005, to be with her Lord.

John was an Army veteran of the Korean War in 1951. He received two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medals and others.

After his discharge, he worked for Potashnick & Associates 40 years. He became project manager in 1971, and retired in 1989. He was a member of Illmo Baptist Church, a lifelong member of VFW Post 6407 in Scott City and American Legion Post 133 in Perryville, Missouri, and also a 54-year member of the AF-AM Free Masons Lodge 288 in Hermitage, Missouri.

Survivors include two sons, John A. (Sandra) Garms of Arnaudville, Louisiana, Jerry Garms of Jackson; a daughter, Bonnie (Marvin) Raines of Chaffee, Missouri; a sister; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Garms; and a very special friend, Joann Lester.

He also was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and three sisters.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Amick-Burnett Chapel in Scott City and from 9 a.m. until time of service Saturday at Illmo Baptist Church.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Bob Herring officiating. Burial will be in New Calvary Cemetery in Farmington, Missouri, with full military honors.
