A cleaning day is held at the new building recently obtained for a new Cape Girardeau teen activity center, expected to be open on a limited basis next month; the building is at East Plaza Way and Sheridan Drive and formerly served as the lodge for the Cape Girardeau Eagles Aerie.

Steve McCadams, an avid crappie angler and a Tennessee Outdoors Guide, is the featured speaker at the annual Sport Show, being held this weekend at the Show Me Center.

1965

Farmers living near Cape Girardeau are reporting that livestock on their farms have been killed in recent days, evidently by dog packs or wild animals such as wolves; John E. Frank, living on Bloomfield Road south of Mount Tabor Park, says four shoats on his farm were killed a few days ago; in the same area, Donald James had a calf that was crippled.

A new grant from the Atomic Energy Commission for scientific work has been made to State College; the grant for $3,140 is earmarked for the departments of chemistry and physics.

1940

The Cape Girardeau district saw a slight moderation from the extreme cold overnight, the temperature reading 7 degrees above zero this morning; this is 15 degrees above the four-year record low point established yesterday.

Several weeks of negotiations by different parties have failed to produce a buyer for the old McBride dwelling at the northwest corner of the intersection of Sprigg and North streets; the dwelling, which has 13 large rooms, might eventually become a fraternity house; both the Benton and Webster societies at the Teachers College are attempting to secure the structure.

1915

A controversy has arisen between the county recorder of deeds and the Rev. M.D. Collins, pastor of the Catholic church in Jackson; the marriage license says the document permits any magistrate or preacher of the gospel to perform the marriage ceremony; recently, Collins erased the word "preacher" on a license he filled out and substituted the word "priest"; the recorder refused to file the license for record and is waiting on the court to make a judgment in the case; the unfortunate couple involved in the controversy obtained a second license, after being married by Collins, and were joined a second time by a justice of the peace.

Doc Phillips, the lumberman, is building a fine two-story apartment house and a beautiful bungalow; the latter will be just east of the apartment house and will face William Street,while the four-family apartment house will face Lorimier Street.
