1990

Workers with Warfield Building Wrecking are dismantling a five-story section of Broadway Park Apartments at 115 N. Fountain St., formerly a part of the historic Idan-Ha Hotel; the apartments were gutted by fire in July 1989.

GALE, Ill. -- Pickets at the Illada Energy Co. hazardous-waste cleanup site were removed late yesterday, after officials of the company hired to sanitize the site agreed to meet with representatives of the laborers and operating engineers unions.

1965

Bartholomew and Associates, a St. Louis planning firm, has proposed to prepare a comprehensive city plan for Cape Girardeau at an estimated cost of $23,500; the plan would project until 1985 and would cover at least all the area within two miles of the city limits.

A bill in the Missouri Senate that would shorten city firemen's average work week to 56 hours has the support of the local firefighters' union, says Carroll Schaefer, its president; however, Fire Commissioner Dewey Hinton is opposed to the bill and says that the firemen are against it too.

1940

Permission for installation of flood lights on the ball diamond at Fairground Park so that softball can be played there at night has been granted to Roy Buckner and others by the City Council; the city will not be called upon to install the lighting equipment nor to pay for current used in illuminating the field for softball games.

Mrs. George M. Thurn is greeted with enthusiastic applause as she steps onto the stage of Broadway Theater to begin the first day's lecture at The Missourian's 14th Annual Cooking School; the school will continue through the next three days, with a lecture and demonstration each afternoon followed by presentation of gifts.

1915

The first case of typhoid fever coming to the attention of doctors of Cape Girardeau as far as is known was reported last week; a man living at 310 Mill St., has been seriously ill for about a week; although the city water has been said by many to be polluted and full of germs, this is the first case of typhoid to be heard of here for some time.

W.A. Bertman of Chicago, general passenger and freight agent of the Chicago, St. Louis and Gulf Transportation Co., has announced a new line of boats will be run by his company between St. Louis and New Orleans beginning March 1.
