The Cape Girardeau County Recorder of Deeds Office is warning the public to watch out for mail offers requiring excessive fees to provide copies of legal documents.

Recorder of Deeds Drew Blattner said in a news release Record Transfer Services, a California-based company, is targeting Missouri residents. He said several county residents brought the issue to his attention.

The company offers copies of property deeds for $83, a considerable markup from the price of copies available through the recorder's office. At the Cape Girardeau County Recorder of Deed's Office, copies are $2 for the first page and $1 for each following page, plus a $1 charge for certification. Blattner said most deeds are about two pages long.
