The city is buying a commercial building at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport at a cost of $40,000 and plans to lease out space for various business ventures; the city council authorized the purchase last night from John Farquhar, who operates an airplane repair business.

Workers at West Lake Quarry near Scott City remain on strike, despite the fact two of three striking unions approved new contract offers; the Operating Engineers Local 513 and Laborers Local 1104 ratified new offers last weekend; but yesterday, Teamsters Local 574 turned down the same pact.

1965

Mrs. Robert O. Hirsch, a substitute teacher in Spanish and French, has filed as a candidate for the Cape Girardeau Board of Education; she is the third candidate for the two seats on the board that will be filled in April; the other hopefuls are Dr. Hugh V. Ashley Jr., a physician who is seeking his third term, and Carl G. Meyer, vice president of Farmers and Merchants Bank.

E. Ross Young is the sole owner of Ross Young and Son Clothiers, 26 N. Main St., having bought the interest in the store owned by his father, Ross Young, and his brother, Russell E. Young.

1940

Members of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce have decided to undertake a campaign to raise $20,000 to be used in the construction of a building to house a new dress factory for Cape Girardeau.

Work on the Campster School building project, southwest of here, was started yesterday, and the WPA sent 24 workers to the job; some are working at a quarry on Highway 74 getting out stone to be used in the school; trees have been cleared out of the way at the building site beside the old school, and a basement will be excavated.

1915

The Tri-County Fair at Sikeston, Missouri, in the future will be known as the Southeast Missouri District Fair; a new company has been organized to take over the assets and liabilities of the old fair company and to purchase the grounds of Col. A.A. Ebert; directors of the new organization are Harry Smith, Emery Matthew, E.C. Matthews, A.C. Sikes and Hal Galeener.

R.K. Wilson has received his commission as postmaster of Jackson; William Schwab, the efficient first assistant, went out with the outgoing postmaster, and Ryland Short will take his place; Leo Ritter, the second assistant, will retain his position for the time being.
