1990

The Water Street Six Band plays on, more than 100 elementary students wait along the river bank, and the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitors Bureau representatives are on hand to greet the Mississippi Queen in the morning; but the paddle-wheeler, scheduled to dock here at 9 a.m., is a no show.

O.J. Miller Jr., has been elected chairman and chief executive officer of Mercantile Bank of Cape Girardeau; it is also announced that a two-story, 8,000-square-foot expansion will be built at the back of the main bank at 325 N. Kingshighway.

1965

Seventeen young people are accepted into communicant membership of St. Andrew Lutheran Church in the morning: Rebecca Bender, Mark Boardman, Greg Boldrey, Charles Cagann, Robert Denton, Ann Dippold, Connie Fiehler, Kim Godwin, James Grebing, Martha Hahs, Mark Kasten, Nancy Kurre, Patricia McLain, Gary Sides, Craig Vechorick, Lonnie Waldrup and David Yoder.

Hundreds honor Dr. Edward C. Crites of Sedgewickville, Missouri, at a reception recognizing his contributions to medicine in 60 years of practice; among those who visit are the first and last children he delivered: Mrs. N.F. Klaus on May 18, 1905, and Edward C. Huffman on July 2, 1956.

1940

Reconstruction is underway in Southeast Missouri communities hard hit by Tuesday night's devastating tornado, but the district in a large measure will take care of its own without outside assistance; Chaffee, Illmo and Fornfelt, the chief center spots of the windstorm, already have set about the job of repairing and rebuilding.

Census supervisor W.C. Wicker announces the population of Chaffee, Missouri, is 3,050, a gain of 148 over the 1930 figure; he also announces the count of several other Southeast Missouri towns: Fisk, 386; Cardwell, 912; Qulin, 357; Holland, 391; Clarkton, 733; Holcomb, 385; Gibson, 144; White Oak, 139, and Hollywood, 140.

1915

The Rev. J.W. Cunningham of Macon, Missouri, arrived in Cape Girardeau Friday morning to take up his work as missionary for Cape Girardeau County; he came in answer to a call extended him by the mission board of Cape Girardeau Missionary Baptist Association.

The Cape Girardeau Capahas open their baseball season, defeating Poplar Bluff, Missouri, 5-0, at Bluff; hurling for the Caps was a former Texas leaguer named Casey.
