Mrs. Patricia S. Williams of Cape Girardeau was ordained a deacon yesterday in the Episcopal Church; Williams, the wife of Dr. C. Edwin Williams, received holy orders from Bishop William A. Jones Jr. of Missouri at Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis; her ordination to the priesthood is expected to take place in early 1991.

Scott and Susan Hellwege are making final preparations for the opening of Wedge's Restaurant, 2120 William St., located in a building formerly occupied by BG's II.

1965

Paving is nearly completed on Interstate 55 from Scott City to Benton, Missouri, but a possible snag may develop because of high water at Commerce, Missouri; while work is progressing on the shoulders at this time, materials used in this phase are surrounded by high water.

The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce has decided it won't make a formal protest of the Frisco Railroad's proposal to abandon all passenger rail service; the chamber's view is that Cape Girardeau, in effect, lost its passenger rail service some years ago under the schedule change.

1940

Six students from Cape Girardeau will be graduated from Missouri School of Mines at Rolla on May 29; they are brothers Clifford M. and Sam R. Boutin, Joseph L. Hoffman, Ivan M. Niedling, Charles C. White and John D. McClendon.

The Cape Girardeau City Council ratifies the appointment of Quintin Williams as a member of the city fire department; last month, Commissioner Phillip H. Steck failed to reappoint Vincent Unnerstall as a fireman, Unnerstall having been assistant chief; Williams' appointment fills the vacancy.

1915

A.W. Jones, an engineer with wide experience, has arrived in Cape Girardeau from Indiana, Pennsylvania, to take charge of the work of digging the big diversion channel; contractor Dewitt C. Stephens had gotten the work well started, when he died unexpectedly in New York City three weeks ago.

Gus Grieb, the well-known electrician, suffers a broken leg in a fall while at work doing some wiring; the bone in the left leg, just above the ankle, snaps in two, when his entire weight comes down on the limb as he falls from a trestle as he and his helper are completing the wiring on the new Giboney houses on William Street.
