With a crest of 41 feet predicted on the Mississippi River on Monday at Cape Girardeau, the floodgates at Independence and Themis streets have been closed; the crest would be 10 feet above flood stage here.

An overwhelming response from members of the St. Vincent de Paul Parish has prompted the church to open a day care center; the center will be housed at 1912 Broadway, formerly the home of Day and Night Day Care Center.

1965

Cape Girardeau Public Schools are allocated $13,725 under the federal "Head Start" program to train 75 pre-school children during the summer months to better prepare them for the opening of school in the fall; in addition, the Nell Holcomb School District is allocated $2,378 to train 15 pupils, and the Jackson School District is alloted $5,500 for a 40-pupil summer program.

Irvin Whitehead, Mike Gross and Otto Privette were awarded State College's highest athletic honor last night, the Clarence Vogelsang Award, at the All-Sports Banquet at Colonial Restaurant; Whitehead was given the award as Back of the Year in Football, Privette as Lineman of the Year in Football, and Gross as Basketball Player of the Year.

The Rev. J. Linn Haw, pastor of Maple Avenue Methodist Church, dies at his home, the church parsonage; he had been sick nine days, taking ill after returning from St. Clair, Missouri, where he had gone to conduct a funeral; Haw, 59, had been pastor here since October.

Alden Pinney, publisher of the Scott County Democrat at Benton, Missouri, has been elected president of the Southeast Missouri Press Association; he succeeds F.J.A. Ernest of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.

1915

The Jackson gravel road is to be oiled at once, so that a firm coating will be given the highway and that dust will be done away with this summer; the work should be started within the next 10 days.

The Frisco Railroad superintendent has been notified that work will resume on the riverfront improvements here July 1; the company has purchased five acres five miles north of here that is a mountain of clay; tracks will be laid to it and, using a steam-shovel outfit, the clay will be dug and transported here to be used for the fill south of Independence Street.
