The second and final round of the Class 1 state golf tournament was moving day for the Advance Hornets. Junior Brian Whitson climbed three spots to finish as state runner-up and helped his team climb a rung and claim sixth place in the standings.

Whitson followed up his first round of 79 with a 77 to finish with a 12-over total of 156 on the par-72 layout at Meadow Lake Golf Course in New Bloomfield, Missouri.

Whitson finished six strokes behind Sean Weber of Barat Academy, who had rounds of 76 and 74 for a 150 total. Weber trailed first-round leader Logan Smith of La Plata by one shot entering Tuesday's play. Smith fell to third, one stroke behind Whitson, with an 82. However, Smith's consolation prize was his team posting a 14-stroke victory in the nine-team competition with a 683 total.

Advance finished sixth at 726 after matching its first-day score of 363. The Hornets were tied for seventh after the first round.

Advance freshman Carson Miles improved two strokes on his first-round score, shooting an 84 for a 170 total to place 17th. Junior Spence Lorch improved five strokes on his first round with a 96, tying for 71st. Senior Grant Woodfin had rounds of 97 and 106 and placed 79th.

Central junior Kobe Franklin and Notre Dame sophomore Jonathan Bell also claimed all-state honors at the Class 3 tournament at Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar, Missouri.

Franklin, a junior, shot a 4-over 76 in the second round, a one-stroke improvement on his first day, to finish tied for 10th. Franklin finished six strokes behind state champion Michael John O'Keefe of Mary Institute & St. Louis Country Day School. O'Keefe started the day tied for sixth -- five shots off the lead -- after a 76, but vaulted to the top with a 1-under 71.

Bell shot a 74 in the second round, a seven-shot improvement on his opening 18 holes, to finish at 155 and tied for 13th with three other competitors.

Notre Dame senior Trent Schumer shot 85 for the second consecutive day and tied for 61st.

In the Class 4 tournament on the par-70 layout at Sedalia Country Club in Sedalia, Missouri, Jackson's Hunter Asher tied for 24th with rounds of 76 and 77.

In Class 2, Saxony Lutheran's Karsten Short tied for 54th after rounds of 86 and 91 on the par-72 layout at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Missouri.

BASEBALL

Chaffee 3, Meadow Heights 2

The fourth-seeded Red Devils rallied and broke a 2-2 tie in the final inning to edge the fifth-seeded Panthers in the opening round of the Class 2 District 3 tournament at Greenville High School.

Austin Copeland got the win on the mound in relief for Alec Bogenpohl. Copeland pitched three innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits. He had three strikeouts and one walk. Bogenpohl threw four innings and allowed no runs on five hits and also had three strikeouts and one walk.

Jacob Douglas sustained the loss. He pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up three earned runs on nine hits. Meadow Heights closed its season with a record of 8-12.

Chaffee (13-13) will face top-seeded and state-ranked host Greenville (20-1) in today's first semifinal at 2 p.m. Second-seeded St. Vincent (11-9) will take on Puxico (8-10) in the second semifinal at 4 p.m. The third-seeded Indians advanced with a 6-5 victory over sixth-seeded Ellington (6-13).

Saxony Lutheran 13, Woodland 3

Conrad Bonney and Tyler Dowdy each had a double and went 2 for 4 at the plate as the fifth-seeded Crusaders upset the fourth-seeded Cardinals in the opening round of the Class 3 District 2 tournament in Charleston, Missouri.

Nathan Hurst went the distance on the mound and also tripled for Saxony Lutheran (16-6). He struck out six.

Landon Johnson sustained the loss. He had a triple to pace Woodland, which closed with a record of 12-10.

Saxony will face top-seeded Scott City (16-12) in today's later semifinal at 4:30 p.m. after the semifinal between second-seeded Kelly (12-15) and either East Prairie (9-12) or Charleston.

Notre Dame 12, Kennett 2

Tom Siebert went 4 for 4 at the plate with two RBIs as the top-seeded Bulldogs routed the fifth-seeded Indians to advance to the championship game of the Class 4 District 1 tournament.

Adam Pope pitched all seven innings and also scored two runs for Notre Dame (23-5). He allowed one earned run, struck out seven and walked two.

Ross Essner had a double and three RBIs for the Bulldogs.

Edward Wilson was the losing pitcher.

Landon Vaughan had two of the four hits for Kennett (11-18).

Notre Dame, the top-ranked team in Class 4, will face second-seeded Perryville at 4:30 p.m. Thursday for a shot at its third straight district title. The Pirates (18-4) beat sixth-seeded host Doniphan (8-12) 6-2 .

Class 1 Sectional 1

Notre Dame's doubles team of Brendan Boswell and John Stroup defeated St. Pius X (Festus)'s Cameron Tucker and Hayden Dix 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Class 1 individuals state tournament.

In the singles, Notre Dame's Jack Gerecke fell to Windsor (Imperial)'s Josh Thibodeaux 6-0, 6-2.
