1990

The Cape Girardeau City Council is requesting that the Missouri Highway and Transportation Department alter the redesign of the intersection of Good Hope Street and Kingshighway to provide better access to businesses in that area.

A group of more than 50 people have expressed concern over a plan to use property at 536 Broadway as a recovery house by Oxford House Inc.; Charles and Mary Shepard, owners of C&M Service, recently purchased the former Walther's Brinkopf-Howell Funeral Home building, and have agreed to lease it to Oxford House Inc., a division of the Missouri Department of Mental Health.

1965

The third annual Christian Arts Festival is held in the evening at Westminster Presbyterian Church; starting off the event is a program of original music, composed and directed by T. Donley Thomas of the State College faculty; a double-quartet then performs, followed by an exhibition of crafts and paintings.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The first services are held in the new St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church here; in addition, graduation of seniors from St. Vincent High School also takes place in the new church.

1940

The 25th anniversary of the priesthood of the Very Rev. Walter M. Quinn, C.M., president of St. Vincent's College, is observed at the college with all-day ceremonies; priests from this district, from St. Louis, Kansas City, Missouri, and Dallas, Texas, are here to participate; Quinn came to the local college two years ago.

Capt. Sidney C. Haubtman and his crew of 48 men are busy constructing the barracks at the CCC camp just at the eastern edge of Jackson on the Daley farm; the camp is also located on the edge of the only tract of timber within miles of Jackson that hasn't been ruined by the ax, the land known as the Cramer tract.

1915

The Rev. F.Y. Campbell, pastor of First Baptist Church, preaches the baccalaureate sermon for the graduating class of the Cape Girardeau high school in the evening at the Presbyterian church; his subject is "In Pleasing Proportions."

That wonder row of rose bushes along the east fence of Dr. A. List's property at the top of Broadway hill is in full bloom, with millions of buds giving their crimson glory to the world; Cape Girardeau could become famous for its roses, if the people would only take the pains and the little trouble necessary to purchase, set out and care for a few plants.
