Scott City is hosting Summerfest for its 39th year this month.

From May 28 to 30, the Scott City Parks and Recreation department has filled the entire weekend with events. Thursday night is kids night. Two bands, Janie Brown and the Chestnut Mountain Gang and Jordan's Tide, perform beginning at 6 p.m.

There will be carnival rides and games for children, with armbands available for $15 each night.

Parks director Phyllis Crump said no alcohol is served on family night.

Friday and Saturday, the events go into full swing. Beginning at 6 p.m., the beer garden opens, and on Friday night, the children's pageant takes place.

Crump said there are a few divisions, including Babies, Tiny Miss and Little Mr. and Miss Contestants are judged on a variety of factors, including their poise and outfits, Crump said.

Also on Friday is the annual washers tournament.

On Saturday, the city pool will be open for free from noon to 4 p.m. for anyone interested, and at 4:30 p.m., the talent show will take place. After the talent show, Paragon will perform.

At 10 p.m., fireworks will start behind the pond at the city park. Crump advised those who want a good seat to get there early.

She said the park is always filled Saturday night.

"It's just a community event to fundraise and get together to keep the tradition alive," she said. "A lot of the people in town still love to come."

Crump estimated about 1,500 people attend Summerfest over three days. Proceeds go into the park department for upgrades.

This year, Crump said she hopes the park can add a water sprinkler to the kiddie pool and a shade area by the pool for those who want to get out of the sun.
