Notre Dame's Bobby Jansen took second place in the high jump at the Class 4 boys track and field state championships Friday and Saturday at Lincoln University's Dwight Reed Stadium in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Jansen finished with jump of 6 feet, 7 inches, which was also good enough to set a school record.

"He just stepped up. He had a ton of confidence today," Notre Dame jumps coach Ryan Long said. "He hadn't really been all bouncy this year, and then his first jump of the whole meet, 5-foot-11, he comes out and was just sitting there bouncing ready to go. He just looked totally confident. You could just tell he was going to have a good day."

Jansen has been dealing with back issues throughout the season, and Long said the approach in preparing for state has been different.

"Last year when he was here, we did a lot of weight lifting to just try and get the muscles ready, and this year we've had to just take it slow and make sure he's just healthy," Long said. "There hasn't really been any training. It's just been for him to jump two days a week, and then use the other three days to just try to stay healthy."

Jansen signed a National Letter of Intent last month with Saint Louis University, and Long believes Jansen's second-place finish could be a motivator as he heads to compete at the college level.

"We've been talking nonstop this year about how we wanted to hit 6-6 and then see how high we can go, and I think it finally all just clicked for him," Long said. "I think it's going to be real big going into SLU."

Grandview finished with 65 points to take first in the boys team standings, followed by West Plains (53) in second and McCluer (51) in third.

Perryville's 800-meter relay team of Payton Besand, Moreno Fonseca, Pablo Mattingly and Kyle Wood took eighth with a time of 1:33.04 for an all-state finish. The Pirates also placed eighth in the 1,600 relay as Besand, Fonseca, Wood and Emilio Mattingly finished in 3:28.65.

Junior Chelsea Drum placed third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:57.96 to lead the Jackson girls team to a 14th-place finish in the team standings.

"That's the second fastest time in school history, which the first fastest time is what she ran last week herself, 4:56," Jackson coach Jimmy Stoverink said. "She basically repeated her performance from last week and took third, so we were real pleased with that outstanding effort on her part."

Sophomore Nicole Humphries finished fourth (39-2) for the Indians in the shot put, freshman Katie Schumer took fifth (10-6) in the pole vault and junior Carli Knott placed seventh in the 400 with a time of 58.36. Jackson's 3,200 relay team of Megan Barnum, Tayler Winick, Knott and Drum took ninth with a time of 9:36.69.

"It was rainy all week up here. It was raining yesterday, and it was raining today. And for throwers, that can really kind of mess with them a little bit. ... She really kind of set the tone," Stoverink said about Humphries. "Her first throw, she threw over 39 feet, and I think that just kind of sends a message to the rest of the field that, 'Hey, rain's not going to bother me.'"

McCluer North's 62 points was good enough for a first-place finish in the girls team standings, followed by Kirkwood (47.5) in second and Blue Springs (47) in third.

On the boys side, junior Dakota Maddox finished third (15.00.00) in the pole vault for Jackson, and the Indians finished in a two-way tie for 18th with Francis Howell in the team standings.

Caleb Bess, Ean Buffington, Jackson Givens and Joseph Reed led Jackson to a third-place finish in the 3,200 relay with a time of 8:01.68.

"We were hoping we could maybe pull out a seventh- or eighth-place finish and just get on the podium, but all four of those guys just ran phenomenal races," Stoverink said about the 3,200 relay team. "... All four of those guys are going to be back next year, and they've got a couple teammates that are going to push them for positions on that 4x800, too, so that's going to be real exciting to have those guys back.

"One of the things I was really proud of, too, is that we had our 4x800 last year qualify for state, and they got 10th. Of course, we qualified again this year, and not a single one of those guys from last year were on the team. These are four completely different guys."

Blue Springs was crowned the boys champion with 96 points, followed by Lafayette (Wildwood) with 73 points in second and St. Louis University High with 50 points in third.
