Business notebook: Local brewing company stops making beer

The John A. Huber Brewing Co., a family-owned craft beer maker located near Fruitland, no longer is producing its Hubrew brand beers, the company's founder said last week.

The company, run by John A. Huber and his family, began producing and distributing several varieties of craft beer to area stores and restaurants in 2011 after beermaking grew from a hobby to a business for Huber. Looking to spend more time on family instead of beer production, Huber said the company is selling the last of its inventory produced this spring.

The Tasting Room, at 3463 Highway FF in Cape Girardeau County, where customers can sample craft beers and other types of drinks, will remain open, as will the HomeBrew Supply of Southeast Missouri, which sells homebrewing equipment and ingredients.

Servpro claims Perry County

Servpro of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties, a cleanup and damage restoration service, officially acquired Perry County as a service territory.

Co-owner Sandy Hastings said the local office has served areas of Perry County for some time, along with Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Mississippi and Scott counties.

The local office, along with Servpro offices in Farmington and Ste. Genevieve, previously shared service in Perry County.

Servpro of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties had to meet certain criteria to claim the area, such as sales goals, Hastings said. The office has served areas in Southeast Missouri since 1992. A ribbon-cutting to mark the expansion of business will be at Perryville Chamber of Commerce at 3:30 p.m. June 9, followed by an informal reception at Mary Jane's Burgers & Brew from 4 to 6 p.m.

Magazine accepting NEWSMAKERS noms

Business Today, the monthly business publication of Rust Communications, is taking nominations for the NEWSMAKERS award.

The award recognizes individuals who have made a significant impact in the community, who are "movers, shakers, do-gooders and local people of interest."

Recipients will be recognized in the August issue.

Nominees must reside in the Business Today coverage area of Cape Girardeau, Scott, Bollinger, Perry, Ste. Genevieve, Stoddard, New Madrid, Butler and Dunklin counties. Deadline for nominations is June 30. Nomination forms are online at semissourian.com/newsmakerform.

Smith to speak at First Friday Coffee

U.S. Rep. Jason Smith, R-Salem, will be the speaker at the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce's First Friday Coffee event this week.

Sponsors of this month's event are Chateau Girardeau and GlennView Strategies. Doors open and breakfast is served at 7 a.m. Friday. The program begins at 7:40 a.m. at Isle Casino Cape Girardeau's event center.

Aire Solutions opening Cape location

Aire Solutions, a Poplar Bluff, Missouri, heating and air conditiong installation and service company, soon will open a new facility at 2355 Rust Ave. in Cape Girardeau. It will contain a shop, warehouse and operations office for the company, according to a news release from commercial broker Tom Kelsey of Lorimont Place, who handled the real-estate transaction.

The family-owned company provides comprehensive air conditioning, heating, ventilation, crawl space, air quality, air flow balancing and energy solutions for residential and commercial customers. The company also installs and services ductwork, geothermal and generator systems.

The company, which opened in 1983, is owned by Tim and Connie Funke. The Cape Girardeau location will enable the company to expand its coverage territory and reduce response times for customer installation and service, according to the release.

Shoe retailer leaves West Park Mall

Finish Line, a shoe and athletic gear store inside West Park Mall, closed last week and will not reopen, a store manager said Wednesday. The store was part of a national retail chain of Finish Line stores.

TheStreet.com, a financial market website, reported recently the chain is cutting capital and closing some stores in an effort to be more profitable.

Vast Broadband, MRV Banks set in Sikeston

A groundbreaking was held May 21 for a new 15,000-square-foot building at 912 S. Main St. in Sikeston, the Standard Democrat reported. The $3 million development will house MRV Bank and offices for VAST Broadband.

The project is slated for completion in October or November, according to Jim Gleason, president and CEO of VAST Broadband. The building will go up on the front of the lot where Fabick CAT was until it closed its Sikeston branch in 2004.

Marble Hill motel holding gala opening

The Woodland Inn, a recently renovated hotel in Marble Hill, Missouri, plans to hold a grand opening and ribbon cutting Saturday, according to a news release from the Bollinger County Chamber of Commerce.

The hotel sat vacant for several years until a local couple, Kelly and Wanda Francis, bought the property, the Banner Press newspaper reported in February. The ribbon cutting is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the hotel.
