SIKESTON, Mo. -- A Sikeston man died after accidentally shooting himself.

About noon Wednesday, officers from the Sikeston Department of Public Safety went to a home on Virginia Street after a report of an accidental shooting. Capt. Jim McMillen, DPS public information officer, said upon officers' arrival, they found a 19-year-old man with a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.

"Police were told that somehow the man accidentally shot himself while handling a firearm," McMillen said in a news release. "EMS quickly responded and transported the man to a local hospital."

The man, who was not identified pending the notification of his family, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

There is no evidence of foul play, McMillen said.
