The steam-powered dredge Potter of the St. Louis District Corps of Engineers is undergoing routine maintenance and repairs at the Missouri Dry Dock shipyard along the Mississippi River here; the work, which includes repainting of its hull, should be completed by Tuesday.

Southeast Missouri State University ranked fifth among 31 colleges and universities in Missouri in 1988-1989 in private contributions received; among 155 comprehensive universities surveyed nationwide, Southeast ranked 12th in private contributions received in that fiscal year; comprehensive universities are non-doctoral and non-research institutions.

1965

The gleaming new postal facilities at Bellevue and Frederick streets are inaugurated to service in the morning; a line forms early in the box lobby as patrons exchange keys for new postal boxes; the new post office's first customer is Dr. Thomas S. Messer, who buys 10 Magna Carta stamps for 50 cents.

For the first time in the history of Philmont Scout Ranch at Cimarron, New Mexico, a whole troop of Boy Scouts earned the honor badge for courageous conduct during the worst rain and flood to hit the area in 40 years; Cape Girardeau Boy Scout Richard B. Renfrow, 11, of Troop 4, was one of 70 Scouts who, after being alerted from sleep shortly before midnight, started a cold, 500-foot climb to escape a roaring mountain torrent.

1940

Despite the damp and chilly conditions, Common Pleas Courthouse Park is again the scene of a political rally; state Sen. Allen McReynolds of Carthage, Missouri, speaks to a crowd in his bid for the Democratic nomination for Missouri governor; he is introduced by Sen. Russell L. Dearmont of St. Louis and Cape Girardeau.

Several British children, through a program of cooperation of the American Association of University Women, may be brought to Cape Girardeau to remove them from the potential war zone in England.

1915

Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Cleaver and four children are here visiting her mother, Mrs. Hardesty, and family; they live in Richmond Hill, a suburb of New York City, and are here to attend the wedding of B.C. Hardesty on Saturday; after the wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Cleaver will go to the San Francisco exhibition, leaving the children in the care of her mother.

The brick work on the new garage building opposite The Republican office in the 200 block of Broadway is started in the morning; brick contractor Schrader is doing the work, which means a first-class job.
