CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. -- Human remains were discovered Monday evening, and they are believed to be those of a Caruthersville man missing for almost a year.

A family member of Jerry Lynn Carr, 34, who was reported missing to Caruthersville Police Department on Aug. 22, 2014, contacted Caruthersville officers at 5:45 p.m. Monday. The family member said they had found what they believed to be Carr's remains in a tree line off County Road 363, just outside the Caruthersville city limits.

Caruthersville officers and Pemiscot County deputies went to the scene. Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell said the scene was secured, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control was contacted to assist in the investigation.

"Officers worked through the night and into this morning gathering evidence from the scene," Greenwell said in a news release. "Personal identification at the scene indicated the remains might be Mr. Carr."

The remains were taken into custody by Pemiscot County Coroner Jim Brimhall. An autopsy will be scheduled in Farmington, Missouri, as soon as possible to attempt to determine the cause of death and make a positive identification.

Greenwell said officers from all three departments had followed leads into the disappearance of Carr during the past year. The investigation will continued by Caruthersville police, the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Office, state police and the Pemiscot County coroner's office, he said.
