Scott County voters will have three distinct choices for presiding commissioner when they go to the polls in the Aug. 7 Democratic primary election; Durward Dover of Oran, Missouri, is hoping for a second term, after ousting incumbent Louie Hirschowitz in 1986; the other candidates are Benny Marshall, a farmer from Blodgett, Missouri, and Everett Holder, a Scott City barber.

Jackson's new $2.7-million Orchard Drive Elementary School, as well as a $1.4-million multipurpose sports activities building now under construction, should be ready for students when classes begin next month.

1965

Thirty Cape Girardeau area children are attending a Friendship Camp this weekend near Fredericktown, Missouri, at the Orchard Crest Camp on the Castor River; the camp is being sponsored by the outreach department of First Christian Church and offers swimming, crafts, hiking, story-telling, campfires and worship.

Speaking yesterday at a gathering in Academic Hall, Mutual Radio Network correspondent Craig Spence said the United States is fighting two wars in Vietnam, one with the Viet Cong guerrillas and the other with American newsmen.

1940

A committee making arrangements for his visit says Sen. Harry S. Truman will speak at a mass meeting at Courthouse Park tomorrow night in the interests of his campaign for the Democratic nomination for reelection; a dinner in honor of the senator will likely also be held.

One hundred harness and running horses have been secured for competition on the racing program of the Southeast Missouri District Fair, to be held at the new park here Sept. 24-29; also, 47 jumping horses have been secured, and the racing and attractions program, including the night horse shows, promises to be an outstanding event.

1915

Celebrating the completion of the Centenary Methodist Church building, the Rev. Dr. W.W. Pinson of Nashville, Tennessee, one of the greatest preachers in the Methodist denomination, delivers the sermon at the morning worship; special evening services, with guest preachers, will be held during the coming week.

Dr. George Walker and family and Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Hobbs motor to Perryville, Missouri, in the afternoon; on their return home, they stop off at Schumer Springs and visit for about an hour with Dr. Walker's father.
