Search continues for men who jumped from bridge

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. -- Authorities and the Coast Guard are looking for two homeless men witnesses say decided to jump from a Mississippi River bridge at St. Louis in hopes of swimming to the Illinois side.

Authorities do not suspect the jump about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday from the Eads Bridge between St. Louis and East St. Louis, Illinois, was a suicide attempt.

Officials say the men were walking with two other homeless people across the bridge when they all decided to jump together.

But only two of them made the leap.

The men who stayed on the bridge saw the two who jumped travel hundreds of yards downriver.

The two witnesses eventually reported the matter, but the Coast Guard wasn't notified until about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
