Evelyn Lonelle English, 93, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, July 26, 2015, at her home.

She was born May 15, 1922, in Ridgley, Tennessee, to Harry Marberry and Clemmie Dennison Holmes. She and William Rudolph English were married Dec. 24, 1944. He died July 27, 2004.

Evelyn graduated from Sikeston, Missouri, High School in 1944. She was elected by the faculty to attend the Sophomore Pilgrimage in Jefferson City.

The sophomores met with the governor, and his wife entertained them at a tea. Evelyn was editor-in-chief of the Sikeston High School paper her senior year.

Evelyn worked as a news reporter for the Poplar Bluff Daily Republican newspaper and the Courier Post of Hannibal, Missouri.

She also was employed by VIP Industries of Cape Girardeau as payroll clerk and charting bus routes for their clients.

She was chairwoman of UNICEF and the American Heart Association in Hannibal, Missouri. She was worthy matron in the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 94 of Hannibal.

Evelyn was a member of Abbey Road Christian Church of Cape Girardeau, where she was an inspiration to many of her church family and always was ready to entertain when the occasion arose.

She is survived by two sons, Roger Lee English of Cape Girardeau and William Robert "Bob" English and wife Mary of Cadiz, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Tonya Renee English, Amy Lynn English and William Benjamin English; and three great-grandchildren, Brandy Bell, Will English and Adelaide English.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" English; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Jo English; two brothers, James Young Holmes and wife Esther Marie (Hilliker) and Billy Bequette Holmes (died at 6 weeks of age); and a sister, Anita Beth Holmes (died at 6 years of age).

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time Thursday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at noon at the funeral home with the Rev. Rodger Kiepe officiating. Entombment will follow at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Memorials may be made to Abbey Road Christian Church, Salvation Army or American Cancer Society.
