City officials say work to stop a serious erosion problem along the east bank of Cape LaCroix Creek in Shawnee Park should begin later this year; the erosion has already caused a significant loss of park land and now threatens a major trunk sewer line which runs several feet east of the creek bank.

Workers at Blaire Industries plants in Cape Girardeau and Scott City will vote Aug. 24 on whether to unionize; the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union has been seeking to organize the plants' more than 200 production and maintenance employees since June 22.

1965

The number of City Council candidates rises to 17 with the filing of an affidavit by W.R. Withers, Cape Girardeau insurance representative, with the city clerk; a primary election will be held Sept. 14.

The clickity-clack of the hand-pulled change system, in use at Buckner-Ragsdale Co., since 1915, will be heard no more; workers have taken down the echoing wires with the two-wheeled carriers that brought customers' change; spare parts for repairs to the old system could no longer be found.

Professor True Taylor of the Teachers College speaks at services at the Christian Church; the congregation's pastor, the Rev. John A. Abel, is on vacation.

The Rev. C.H. Morton, for 21 years the pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau, informs the church session of his intention to resign to accept the pastorate of the Presbyterian Church in Potosi, Missouri, Oct. 1; the congregation will take action Aug. 25 on his request to resign; Morton says that, with advancing years, he wants to have a smaller charge with less arduous duties.

1915

John Dungey, a plasterer, arrived here a few days ago from Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and went to work on the new high school building; since coming here, Dungey has decided to make Cape Girardeau his home and will move his family here as soon as he finds accommodations.

Ida Knepper, who has been teaching at the Normal School for a year, leaves in the morning for California; her sister will accompany her; Knepper will teach mathematics at Galloway College in Searcy, Arkansas, next year.
