SCOTT CITY -- Cletus F. Messmer, 91, of Scott City died Monday, Aug. 10, 2015, at The Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Dec. 17, 1923, in Kelso, Missouri, to Edward Valentine and Clara Martin Messmer.

He married Opal C. "Dee" Kalkbrinner on June 20, 1953. She preceded him in death July 25, 2014.

He was an electrician. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Scott City and VFW Post 6407 in Scott City. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include two daughters, Dee (Conley) Laster and Kay (David) Gilpin, both of Commerce, Missouri; four grandchildren, Melinda (Scott) Engelen, Beth (Branden) McCullough, Brian (Krissy) Gilpin and Amber (Robert) Gill; and five great-grandchildren, Addison, Drew, Colin, Eli and Owen.

He also was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Scott City.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Joe Weidenbenner at 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
