High school roundup: Perryville boys soccer team kicks off season with win over Poplar Bluff

Eann Bergman scored the lone goal on an assist from Pablo Mattingly as the defending Class 2 boys soccer state champion Perryville kicked off its season with a 1-0 win at home over Poplar Bluff on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Trent Unterreiner had seven saves in the shutout.

Perryville (1-0) returns to the field Friday in the first round of the Greg Kline Invitational at Carbondale, Illinois. The Pirates will open bracket play at 5:30 p.m. against Breese Central (Ill.).

Dusty Lorenz scored the lone goal on an assist from Joe Rubach in the Crusaders' loss to the Raiders in the opening round of the Festus Classic.

Saxony Lutheran (0-2) will face host Festus at 4 p.m. today in the second round of the tournament.

Drew Reischman hit a double and went 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Eagles to victory at home over the Lions in their fall season debut.

Layne Johnson pitched six innings to get the win for Oran (1-0). He gave up one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Brady Bibbs went the distance on the mound and sustained the loss for Senath-Hornersville (0-1). He allowed one earned run, struck out six and walked four.

Sarah Handrahan went the distance in the circle for Jefferson (3-1). She allowed two earned runs on five hits and recorded nine strikeouts and two walks.

Ashlynn Collier blasted a two-run home run as the Crusaders continued their winning ways and racked up another lopsided win on the road.

Kelli Brunke notched her third win in the circle for Saxony Lutheran (3-0). She pitched six innings, gave up one earned run, struck out three and walked two. She also smacked a three-run home run.

Logan Meyr also had a solo home run for the Crusaders. Grace Mirly drove in five runs and Cassidy Wunderlich added a pair of doubles with four RBIs.

Kira Cunningham went the distance and sustained the loss for Twin Rivers (0-2).

BOYS SWIMMING

Central wins Mega Meet

The Tigers set state-qualifying times in eight events and outpaced crosstown rival Notre Dame by 41 points to win their six-team Mega Meet at Central Municipal Pool.

Sophomores Brogan Davis and Sam Hahs, along with junior Reagan Ragsdale and senior John Young, took first place in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays to lead the Tigers. Davis, last year's Semoball Boys Swimmer of the Year, posted state-qualifying first-place times in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke for Central. Hahs finished first in the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke with state-qualifying times, while Ragsdale set his state qualifiers in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle.

Hahs also shattered a 19-year-old school record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 32 seconds. The original school record was set by Zack Tobin in 1996.

"We were real thrilled," Central coach Dayna Powell said. "We had really good swims today."

Jackson, which finished fourth in the team standings, set a first-place state-qualifying time of 1 minute, 31.65 seconds in the 200 freestyle relay, which consisted of freshmen Sam Rinehart, Austin Arnzen, Brandon Pemberton and Max Edwards.

VOLLEYBALL

Woodland Tournament

Advance, Saxony Lutheran and host Woodland all ended with 4-2 records in the second night of pool play at the Woodland Invitational Tournament.

The three-way tie forced the final seedings to come to point differentials, which the Hornets won by five points over Woodland to draw the first seed. Advance crushed Leopold 19-9, 19-4 in its first game of the night, then split with Saxony 19-16, 15-19 and tied Woodland 12-19, 19-17. Woodland finished second in the pool following a 15-19, 19-16 split with Saxony and a 19-12, 19-16 sweep of Leopold. Saxony also beat Leopold 19-12, 19-16 to take the third seed.

Sophomore Krista finished with 18 kills on the night to lead the Cardinals. Madison Cover dished out 20 assists and Anna Deck added nine assists overall for Woodland (1-0-2). Emma Rinacke tallied 11 blocks and three kills and Mackenzie Altenthal added five blocks and two kills for Woodland. Chelsea Cureton notched eight digs.

Sophomore Allie Sprink recorded 18 digs, 12 kills and five aces overall to lead Saxony (1-0-2). Jordan Hecht recorded 11 assists and eight kills, and Logan Franke contributed six kills for the Crusaders. Ashley Fritsche had 23 digs, and Brianna Mueller dished out 11 assists and served six aces.

Bracket play begins Thursday with top-seeded Advance (2-0-2) taking on eighth-seeded Oak Ridge (0-3) at 5 p.m. followed by fourth-seeded Leopold (0-3) facing fifth-seeded Bell City (2-0-10) at 6 p.m. Second-seeded host Woodland will then play seventh-seeded Zalma (2-2) at 7 p.m. before third-seeded Saxony squares off with sixth-seeded Meadow Heights (2-1-1) at 8 p.m. The semifinals, along with the third-place and championship matches, are scheduled for Friday.
