Grace United Methodist Women met Tuesday with 18 members present. Mary Ann Pensel passed out pamphlets about an upcoming grandparents' conference. She led a devotion from "Lifting Up," mentioning UMW-sponsored Spofford House in Kansas City, Missouri, that has been in existence 90 years treating children up to age 12 for physical and sexual abuse; Susanna Wesley House in East Prairie, Missouri, for children and adults; Methodist in Indonesia and Mongolia receive support for hospice care. The devotion was titled "Have You Checked Your Compass Lately?"

Food was prepared and served by the Evening Circle.

Barbara Miller, president, introduced Capt. Ronnie Amick of Salvation Army, who presented the program on the origin and work of the Salvation Army, founded in 1865 by William Booth, a Methodist minister. He wanted to reach and serve people on the street. The Salvation Army is known for its Red Kettle from Thanksgiving to Christmas and helping in emergency disasters, but has many programs to serve people's needs. The Cape Girardeau location opened 115 years ago on the front lawn of Centenary Methodist Church. It is Bible-based and motivated by love of God. It serves in 127 countries.

Miller began the business meeting with the reading of minutes, and the treasurer's reports were given to each person as Jean Wetzel was not present.

Old Business: Miller announced that Hobbs Chapel, New McKendree United Methodist Church, Zion United Methodist Church and New Salem United Methodist Church want to be a part of countywide dinner which Grace United Methodist Church will host at 6 p.m. Oct. 6. Dinner chair, Margaret Zieba, reported Port Cape will cater meal with Grace UMW preparing slaw and dessert. Shauna Long is event chair to provide mixer, set up table for check in, name tags and collect $6 for the meal.

Church Women United is today at Centenary Life Center. Mini School of Missions is Sept. 12 and Missouri UMW annual meeting is Sept. 25-26 at Farmington, Missouri.

New Business: Long is looking into new recipes for the Casserole Project. The craft fair will be Nov. 14 in the church fellowship center. Grace UMW will have a bake-sale booth rather than craft booth.

The presentation and vote of officers will be next month, announced by Sandy Shandy, nomination committee chair.

Members were asked to vote on Special Membership Pin recipients. Put your vote in envelope and give to Miller.

Circle chairs are to turn in list of those who went "green" by Nov. 20.

Miller welcomed Glenn and Barbara Patterson, retired clergy.
