KENNETT, Mo. -- The Kennett Humane Department is looking for anyone with information about young pit bull that was thrown onto a ditch bank just outside the city limits, where people illegally dump their trash.

According to Humane Department officer Tena Petix, a 4-month-old puppy, now known as Eyore, was in poor condition when it was dumped in an area at the end of Ely Street.

"Evidently, whoever dumped the puppy left him in his kennel along with a few blankets," Petix said, "as if that was going to make it any better. I just want to find out who did this, so we are asking anyone who recognizes the puppy or knows anything about it to contact us."

Petix said the puppy was found by a good Samaritan who took him in, cleaned him and cared for him over the weekend until the Humane Department could be contacted.

"He was treated by Dr. Bill Daffron in Piggott (Arkansas)," she said. "It was determined that the puppy has mange and secondary infections, but what is so sad is that it would not have gotten this bad if he would have been treated earlier, fed properly and had a clean, dry place to live."

Petix said they have no leads as to who dumped and abandoned Eyore, which is against the law. Eyore is at the Humane Department recovering.

"It is awful, and the only way I'm going to be able to cut down on the number of dogs coming into KHD is to give citations to people with dogs that are running lose," she said. "It's crazy, and because these dogs are running lose, they are getting hit by cars and coming to us needing medical attention."

Petix said she had four dogs at the pound with injuries because they had been hit by cars, and one is needing a leg amputated.

Anyone with information on Eyore is asked to call the Humane Department at (573) 888-4522. Anyone who would like to donate for the medical care of the animals at the facility may contact Kennett Veterinary Clinic in Kennett, KenMo Vet Care in Kennett or Crowley's Ridge Veterinary Clinic in Piggott. Donations also can be mailed to KHD, 200 Cedar St., Kennett, MO 63857.
