A three-year, quarter-cent sales tax proposal that would have funded construction of a sports complex at Shawnee Park went down to defeat yesterday, as 58 percent of Cape Girardeau voters rejected the tax; residents voted nearly two to one to approve a sewer revenue bond issue that will enable the city to issue $2.5 million in bonds to pay for construction of a trunk sewer-system extension in the northwest part of the city.

A proposal to annex 450 acres of land into the city of Jackson was approved by voters in Jackson, but rejected by property owners in the area to be annexed.

1965

Spec. 5 Benjamin R. Pinkerton, Jackson Route 1, died Thursday as a result of a helicopter crash in Vietnam; eight men were killed in the crash; he was 21 and a member of the First Cavalry Airmobile Division; he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pinkerton.

A rifle company and one platoon of the 1st Battalion, 140th Infantry, with headquarters at Cape Girardeau, have been transferred to the 138th Infantry here and will be brought up to full-strength as a part of the "beefing up" of the 10 units affected in Missouri; the rifle company is Bravo Company of Perryville, Missouri, with 157 members, and the rifle platoon includes 44 men from Alpha Company in Jackson.

1940

Nelle Gilmer arrives in Cape Girardeau from St. Paul, Minnesota, to make advance preparations for the presentation here of the original Passion Play, Nov. 21-24; the play features the world-famous Christus portrayer, Joseph Meier, in the leading role; the production, to be staged in the Teachers College auditoium, will be sponsored by The Southeast Missourian.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe L. Moseley have moved from 1408 Bessie St., to their newly completed home at 1453 Broadway; the structure, a large white brick house of colonial style, occupies a portion of the site of the old Brooks family home; Moseley heads Joe L. Moseley, Inc., a retail jewelry and photo supply firm at 801 Broadway.

1915

No church services are held at the South Cape Methodist Church; the church, which is being moved to the corner of Maple and Ellis streets from its original position, is stuck in transit; Fritz Brand had all kinds of trouble turning the building as he started it on its way down Giboney Street to Maple; Saturday morning it was at the foot of the Maple Street hill and ready to start up that incline on Monday.

The Cape Girardeau Capahas end their season in fine fashion, taking both games of a double header; the Chaffee, Missouri, club falls first to the Caps, 8-3, and then the Illmo boys do the same, 5-0.
