A Cape Girardeau woman said she accidentally stabbed her ex-boyfriend while trying to defend herself.

Cape Girardeau police responded to the 2800 block of Whitener Street to a call about 4 p.m. Friday about blood in the driveway and hallway of the apartment complex, according to a probable-cause statement from Cape Girardeau police officer R. Newton. About 40 minutes later, a victim was reported at Saint Francis Medical Center with a stab wound to the right side of his torso and a cut on his left wrist, Newton wrote.

Tricia Mahurin, 26, of Cape Girardeau arrived back at the apartment and admitted to officers she had stabbed the victim, Newton wrote.

Mahurin said the man was at her apartment collecting his belongings because their relationship had ended. While he was there, he raised his hand and made a fist in a threatening manner, Newton wrote. Mahurin said the man had struck her in the past, so she grabbed a knife in an effort to scare him.

"Get your stuff out of my house," Mahurin told the man, Newton wrote.

At that point, the man grabbed her by the front of her neck and pushed her down on a table, and she told the victim twice to stop, Newton wrote. She pulled her arm back with the knife in her hand and when she attempted to get away, she slipped and cut him, Newton wrote.

"(I) didn't mean to hurt anyone," Mahurin told Newton.

Newton noted Mahurin had red marks on the right side of her neck that appeared to be consistent with a hand grabbing it, and she had bruising to her chest and left shoulder.

Mahurin was arrested Saturday and charged with felony domestic assault. Her first court appearance was Wednesday, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 1.

The man previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanor domestic assault and was incarcerated for 10 days in the Cape Girardeau jail starting June 12, 2009.
