Fifth person charged in Hayti slaying

HAYTI, Mo. -- A fifth person was arrested late Friday and faces murder charges in connection with the September murder of a Hayti man. Heather Cummings, 26, of Boonville, Missouri, was arrested Friday night on a warrant from Pemiscot County charging her with the first-degree murder of David L. "Trey" Phelps, according to Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell. Phelps' body was found lying next to his car in his driveway at 915 Swan Lake Drive between 5 and 6 a.m. Sept. 24. Cummings is being held in the Cooper County Jail with no bond, Greenwell said.

Man allegedly killed man, injured woman

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- A Poplar Bluff man will stand trial on charges he attacked his live-in girlfriend at their home, critically injuring her and killing another man. William Anthony Pickard, 32, waived his preliminary hearing last week and will appear for arraignment Dec. 10. He is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, armed criminal action and first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle. All four charges are felonies. Pickard is accused of stabbing Vickie Williams and Joshua Sharar, both 31, inside a trailer two to three miles north of Marble Hill, Bollinger County Sgt. Della Moore wrote in a probable-cause statement.

Sikeston man wins $100,000 in lottery

A Sikeston, Missouri, man has claimed a $100,000 Missouri Lottery jackpot. Jason Bell, 43, bought the winning Show Me Cash ticket at MDK Groceries, 22976 U.S. 61, in Oran, Missouri. He matched all five winning numbers for the Oct. 27 Show Me Cash drawing. The winning numbers were 4, 19, 24, 28 and 33. MDK Groceries received a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Accident kills Hayti woman

HAYTI, Mo. -- A Hayti woman was fatally injured in a one-vehicle accident Thursday morning two miles south of Hayti. Everlene Fane, 60, was traveling south on County Road 407, when her vehicle crossed the center, overcorrected, ran off the left side of the road, hit a ditch and overturned, according to information from the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Fane's passenger, Arlene H. Whitley, was seriously injured and airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. Fane was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:20 a.m. by Pemiscot County Coroner Jim Brimhall.

Person of interest sought in shooting

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Sikeston police are looking for a person of interest after a man was found shot Saturday afternoon. Raymond Mitchell, 27, suffered gunshot wounds to his torso at a home in the 400 block of South New Madrid Street in Sikeston. Police said in a news release Mitchell underwent surgery at a hospital and is expected to survive. Police are seeking Cameron Martryl Woods, 22, of Fresno, California. Those who know of Woods' whereabouts are asked to call (573) 471-4711. Police caution that Woods may be armed.
