Deadline looms for Leadership Cape applications

Friday is the deadline to apply for the 2016 Leadership Cape class.

The goal of the program, led by the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce, is to identify emerging leaders and help develop their potential as community leaders.

Next year's program will begin with a reception Jan. 13. The class will meet periodically throughout the year to discuss issues facing the city, such as public health, learning, communication and policy-making.

A graduation reception will conclude the program July 28.

One of the most visible parts of the Leadership Cape program are its team projects. To foster leadership skills in a team environment, participants work in teams on a project they think would improve the city.

Projects presented by teams in recent years have included a bike-sharing program, Food Truck Fridays, a pavilion for ice skating and sand volleyball near the Osage Centre and a Thursday Night Live event for local musicians, artists and not-for-profits.

Team project presentations will be made at First Friday Coffee in May.

Participants should plan to attend the Leadership Cape retreat and each session. Participants missing more than one session will be required to make up the sessions the following year to graduate.

To receive an application, call the chamber of commerce at (573) 335-3312. Applications must be received by Friday. Chamber membership is not a requirement.

Those chosen for next year's program will be notified by Dec. 4.
